DEEP BLUE SEA - DVD MovieWith a voracious trio of mako sharks wreaking havoc, Deep Blue Sea dares to up the ante on Jaws, but director Renny Harlin trades the nuanced suspense of Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster for the trickery of the digital age. In other words, why build genuine terror when you can show ill-fated humans getting torn into bloody chunks? The aforementioned makos have been lab rats in an effort to harvest a miracle cure for Alzheimer's disease from the brains of sharks, but the research has an unfortunate side effect: the sharks get smarter, and they're determined to break out of Aquatica, the deep-sea complex where they've been penned.

Model-actress Saffron Burrows plays the researcher; Thomas Jane pulls double-duty as shark ex! pert and action hunk; Samuel L. Jackson's the corporate sponsor who chooses the worst time for an Aquatica tour; and rapper LL Cool J is nicely cast as Aquatica's cook and comic relief. Michael Rapaport, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Stellan Skarsgård round out the cast, most of whom are turned into shark food as the makos turn Aquatica into a floating junkyard. Harlin takes devilish pleasure in providing sudden, unexpected shocks--no small feat in such a derivative thriller--and as a series of action set-pieces, Deep Blue Sea never disappoints. It's inevitable that Burrows should end up in her underwear like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but even then the movie offers a credible reason for the strip-down; that Deep Blue Sea can be simultaneously ridiculous and sensible is just another one of its shlocky charms. --Jeff ShannonSearching for a cure to Alzheimer's disease a group of scientists on an isolated research facility become the bait as! a trio of intelligent sharks fight back.

Lizzie Blue befriends Effie Mae at a time in our history when white and black girls were not allowed to be friends. Their time together is short, but their feelings for each other run deep. Lizzie grows up a lot on her tenth birthday as she begins to learn about prejudice and discrimination. The screenplay for the major motion picture The Door in the Floor, based on the #1 national bestseller A Widow for One Year by John Irving

In Irving’s introduction to Tod Williams’s screenplay, John Irving calls the script “the most word-for-word faithful translation to film of any of the adaptations written from my no! velsâ€"including my own adaptation of The Cider House Rules.” Yet Williams has made a radical and insightful choice: namely, to tell only the first third of Irving’s long, dark novel.

In this part of the story, sixteen-year-old Eddie O’Hare, an aspiring writer, believes he has landed the perfect summer job when he is hired as the personal assistant to the successful children’s book illustrator and author Ted Cole. But the Coles are a family marked by tragedy. Their two teenage sons were killed in a car accident; Marion Cole, the boys’ mother, has never recovered from their loss. Ted and Marion have temporarily separated, and their living arrangements, which involve their four-year-old daughter, Ruth, areâ€"especially to Eddie’s limited experienceâ€"baffling. Ted seems to be having an affair with his model, the acerbic Mrs. Vaughn, and Marion and Eddie increasingly find themselves alone together or alone with Ruth.

The Door in the Floor is a smooth and vivid adaptation of the darkest, most distu! rbing pa rt of A Widow for One Year.Mighty Line T Markers are tough and they stick to almost any floor. Beyond the Sea

  • TESTED
One of America’s greatest performers, Bobby Darin lived a rags-to-riches life. He worked his way from shady nightclubs to his dream destination, The Copacabana, where he wowed crowds with "Splish Splash," "Mack the Knife" and other hits. He was a marvel at singing, songwriting and performing â€" stealing the hearts of fans everywhere despite the suffering in his own hear. The chameleon-like actor Kevin Spacey is best known for playing pyschopaths (in Seven and The Usual Suspects) and capturing a creepy mid-life crisis in American Beauty--but surprisingly, playing crooner Bobby Darin, Spacey does some snappy dancing and top-notch singing. Beyond the Sea puts Darin's life through a bit of a kaleidoscope: While singing Darin's most memorable hit, "Mack the Knife," Darin suddenly stops the show, revealing that he's not at a nightclub, but in the middle of a s! hooting a scene about his life as a nightclub performer. Why has he stopped? Because he's just seen himself as a young boy, peering from behind a curtain. Such self-conscious narrative twists recur throughout the movie, turning Darin's fight for fame and respect into a love story between his adult and childhood selves. Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!), a hugely popular movie star in her own right, was supposedly the love of Darin's life, but she never holds his attention as does his childhood self (played by newcomer William Ullrich). It's a striking metaphor for the narcissism that drives such success-hungry entertainers. But despite (or perhaps because of) the complexity of the telling, the events never grip your emotions; though Darin's life featured hits galore and a few soap opera twists, his story lacks the seductive charm of his nighclub show. Also featuring Bob Hoskins, John Goodman, Brenda Blethyn, and Greta Scacchi. --Bret Fetzer!

BABYLON AD (SPECIAL EDITION) - DVD MovieConfusing and chaotic, Babylon A.D. was said by its director, Mathieu Kassovitz, to have been heavily cut in order to obtain a PG-13 rating. Whether or not that e! xplains why the film feels so thin on story details and heavy ! on oblig atory explosions, is hard to say. What is clear is that the film is mildly enjoyable if one just focuses on the non-stop action. Vin Diesel plays Toorop, a futuristic mercenary living in Eastern Europe and eating unappetizing critters. A gangster named Gorsky (Gerard Depardieu) engages him to transport a girl, Aurora (the spooky-looking Melanie Thierry), and her chaperone, a nun named Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh), from Russia to New York, taking a route over the top of the world. With no idea what's so special about Aurora, Toorop soon encounters some inexplicable facts. First, Aurora has a wild passion for helpless people, including the poor, refugees, etc.--so wild, she has to be contained at times. She also has a strange genius for understanding such things as handling the controls of an old submarine, which she has never been done before.

Over the North Pole and down into America, Toorop is drawn into a battle for possession of Aurora fought in Manhattan's streets. ! The combatants, it turns out, are more or less Aurora's parents, who have very different reasons for wanting something special she's carrying within her. The complicated story is never truly clear, making it hard to sympathize with a downbeat ending or enjoying a sophisticated support cast including Yeoh, Charlotte Rampling, Depardieu and Lambert Wilson. Diesel is his usual laconic and enjoyable self, and his performance as a hit man who settles somewhat into a makeshift family with Rebeka and Aurora is as touching as his fighting skills are still impressive. --Tom Keogh

In this hilarious romantic comedy, Gray (Heather Graham) helps her brother (Tom Cavanaugh) find the love of his life. But the night before her brother's wedding, Gray's world is turned upside-down when she discovers that she has feelings for his fiancé (Bridget Moynahan)! With the help of a sarcastic co-worker (Molly Shannon), a sympathetic cab driver (Alan Cumming), and her therapist (Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek), Gray is forced to figure out who she really is.Gray Matters has one of the most adorable casts of any movie in recent years--the combined sweetness of Heather Graham (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Bridget Moynahan (Lord of War), Molly Shannon (Year of the Do! g), Thomas Cavanagh (Ed), Alan Cumming (X-Men 2), and Sissy Spacek (Carrie, In the Bedroom) narrowly avoids being diabetes-inducing. Gray (Graham) and her brother Sam (Cavanagh) have been best friends forever--so close that they find it hard to date. Gray pushes Sam into asking out Charlie (Moynahan), but when Sam and Charlie hit it off so well they spontaneously decide to get married, Gray finds herself unexpectedly dismayed... but not as dismayed as she is when, on a girls' night out before the ceremony, she and Charlie share a drunken kiss that sets Gray's body tingling. Gray Matters juggles a lot of emotional issues; the sibling interconnectedness problem doesn't flow smoothly into the coming-out story of the movie's second half. But sprinkled throughout are charming scenes and wonderfully deft moments that make the story's clumsy missteps all the more baffling. There's no question that Graham is a star who just can't seem to find ! the right vehicle; Gray Matters won't be her breakthrou! gh, but it's further evidence of her significant appeal. --Bret FetzerA perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy’s decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.
Each chapter focuses on a specific case, opening with a detailed description of the patient’s diagnosis and the procedure that will need to be performed, followed by the prayer “request.” From there, readers get to look over Dr. Levy’s shoulder as he performs the operation, and then we waitâ€"right alongside Dr. Levy, the patients, and their familiesâ€"to see the final results.
Dr. Levy’s musings on what successful and unsuccessful surgical results imply about God, faith, and the power of prayer are honest and insightful. As we watch him come to his ultimate conclusion that no! matter what the results of the procedure are, “God is good,” we cannot help but be truly moved and inspired.

In this sweeping epic of the northernmost American frontier, James A. Michener guides us across Alaska’s fierce terrain, from the long-forgotten past to the bustling technological present, as his characters struggle for survival. The exciting high points of Alaska’s story, from its brutal prehistory, through the nineteenth century and the American acquisition, to its modern status as America’s thriving forty-ninth state, are brought vividly to life in this remarkable novel: the gold rush; the tremendous growth and exploitation of the salmon industry; the discovery of oil and its social and economic consequences; the difficult construction of the Alcan Highway, which made possible the defense of t! he territory in World War II. A spellbinding portrait of a human community struggling to establish its place in the world, Alaska traces a bold and majestic history of the enduring spirit of a land and its people.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Single-Disc Widescreen Edition)

  • Subtitles: English, Spanish, French

When Harry Potter's name emerges from the Goblet of Fire, he becomes a competitor in a grueling battle for glory among three wizarding schools - the Triwizard Tournament. But since Harry never submitted his name for the Tournament, who did? Now Harry must confront a deadly dragon, fierce water demons and an enchanted maze only to find himself in the cruel grasp of He Who Must Not Be Named. In this fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, everything changes as Harry, Ron and Hermione leave childhood forever and take on challenges greater than anything they could have imagined. The latest entry in the Harry Potte! r saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung), and has his first big fight with best bud Ron (Rupert Grint). Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione (Emma Watson) comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold.

But don't worry, there's ! plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When t! he deadl y Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson a! s Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. --Ellen A. Kim
